31 ° Course de l'Escalade - Geneva - 06/12/2008
Dear friends! Do not be fooled by the message behind the photos: no was an international gathering of pastry, but once I took the colors of the traditional stroke runners without borders in the heart of Geneva's old town, the Escalade (Saturday, December 6, 2008). Miraculously, no rain, it was not easy to juggle between 1,800 runners (this is the phone number of my band!) In the dark wet stone streets of Geneva. 7.250 km, up and down the old city three times, for a time that I dare say information: 33'01. Tragic part of the last, I managed to keep pace at the end of the second lap. But he prevailed in a race much like "collective", where he was locked in a joint effort, a veritable feast (25,000 Participants of the day in the middle of an enthusiastic crowd). As for the Sports Day tradition ended with the "pots", the race (parade) in disguise, as always crowded with many children.
thanks to the moral support of the Christian Runners without Borders (also LUIMO material) Philip and Francesca!

Eritrean BERNARDI ITALIAN GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS ASSAULT HUMAN Rights Activists - Rome
Eritrean Government supporters in Rome Have Assaulted eight human rights protestors, injuring an Italian woman Seriously, Who Was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The incident, caught on video camera, Took place on October 26 During an event Opened by the Eritrean Minister of Defence and Allegedly sponsored by the Eritrean government.
A bus from Milan carrying around fifty government supporters arrived at the venue just as Dania Avallone, head of the Italian human rights NGO ASPER, was speaking into a microphone. As they left the bus some began hurling abuse at the activists and pushed past two Italian policemen. They then pelted the protestors with bottles, stones and cans and also assaulted them physically. The attack ended when police reinforcements arrived at the scene.
Ms. Avallone lost consciousness during the assault when a stone struck her in the kidneys. She was kept in hospital overnight for observation, but is now recovering at home and considering her legal options.
Ms. Avallone told Christian Solidarity Worldwide: “This is what they do in Eritrea – they forcibly repress everyone and everything. But we are in Europe, and we have the right to speak out. They can’t stop us or persuade the police to move us, so in their frustration they assault us”.
She added; “This is the fourth time my friends and I have been assaulted by supporters of the Eritrean ruling party, but the first time that we have been able to obtain evidence of the assault. I am Italian living in my own country, yet they assault me without fear. Can you imagine what they will do to an Eritrean refugee? They can kill them at any time and no one will know or take action”
The Eritrean government is one of the most repressive in Africa. Thousands of prisoners of conscience and belief are detained arbitrarily and indefinitely in prisons, open air facilities, police cells, metal containers and other makeshift prisons where conditions are life threatening and torture is rife. Each year hundreds of citizens risk their lives attempting to escape repressive government policies, which include an obligatory but open-ended military service regime where conscripts are used as labourers on government farms and construction projects.
Tina Lambert, Advocacy Director at CSW, said: “CSW condemns this unwarranted attack on people who were merely exercising their legitimate right to protest peacefully. We call on the Italian authorities to fully investigate this assault and to speedily bring those responsible to justice. A swift outcome will not only end the harassment of European human rights defenders, but will also encourage the many vulnerable Eritrean refugees and asylum seekers in Europe who continue to feel insecure to two intimidating actions of the Eritrean government supporters. Grimpée des Pays Rochois 2008 - La Roche sur Foron - 28/09/2008
Runners without Borders runs in Haute Savoie, France. The series of races in the mountains: at the suggestion of Bern Francesca (Sacco), soon to be racing with our T-shirt, I left (Joseph) for this adventure of 10km and 950m of elevation gain. In a spectacular picture, where the rolling hills give way to the first mountain pastures, it is not fatigue. By Francesca thoroughly enjoyed the pleasure of the company. I helped in the difficult start (a steep slope, unfortunately asphalt), she in my time of trouble in between. I discovered that in the races you can also stop! They are then distributed regaining almost all the runners who passed m'avevano, closing at 1:09 a.m. with dignity. Every race teaches something, whether it is lived with others, this time was to learn to share ... A lesson that will strengthen the spirit of the runners without borders! Joseph

Child Alert: Horn of Africa - UNICEF - 11 ^ 09/09/2008
UNICEF's new report, 'Child Alert: Horn of Africa', highlights the growing need for humanitarian aid in parts of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, where millions of people are affected by the worst drought to hit the region in decades. Recent rains have come too late to help pastoralists who move throughout the Horn of Africa while tending to livestock, their primary source of income. Those Most at risk are children.

60 million child brides - 24/08/2008
There are 60 million "child brides" in the world, according to the UN. The wedding day arrives usually between 12 and 14 years, sometimes even earlier. The husband is often an older man, never met before.
The organization American International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) has compiled a "Top 20" countries in which marriages of minors are most common: Niger is the first place (76.6% of brides are under 18 years), followed by Chad, Bangladesh, Mali, Guinea, Central African Republic, Nepal, Mozambique, Uganda, Burkina Faso, India, Ethiopia, Liberia, Yemen, Cameroon, Eritrea, Malawi, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Zambia. The "ranking" (see photo) is based on standardized questionnaires but these are not available for all countries. Stay away from statistics, for example, much of the Middle East.
countries of the Top 20 are the poorest in the world. The child brides come from the poorest families in these countries.
In Central and West Africa, one third of girls brides say their husbands have at least 11 years older than them. In all countries in the Top 20 there are cases where the age difference is decades: even 70 years. How do you explain that? When there is a 'price for the bride, "it takes years of work because a man can afford a young woman. In polygamous unions, moreover, as the husband ages new wives are getting younger.
brides girls are denied the opportunity to study and work: thereby perpetuating the cycle of poverty from which they come. They can not leave her husband because they do not have the money to return the dowry, and divorce is often considered unacceptable. The problem is not only early marriage, early childbirth, but also. Death in childbirth is five times more likely for girls under 15 years than for teens, according to the agency for the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). In sub-Saharan Africa, in addition, various studies show that girls are married are more likely to contract AIDS than single girls and sexually active: lose their virginity with sick husbands and do not have the power to deny or ask them to use condoms.

Eritrea - Ethiopia withdrew the UN mission - 31/07/2008
Its purpose was to monitor the border and any border crossings between the two countries, but eight years after the peace accords tensions between the two countries remained. So much so that "it was impossible to carry out the mandate," according to the UN. Now between Ethiopia and Eritrea again the danger of a new confrontation.
The UN Security Council has decided not to extend the peacekeeping mission on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea (Minuee) Resolution 1827, submitted by Belgium and approved unanimously by the 15-member body suspending the mandate of about 1,700 peacekeepers deployed on the border between the two countries, which had the task of monitoring the cease-fire and the situation in the buffer zone, a large 24 square kilometers.
The mission, whose mandate would be terminated on 31 July, was born with the signing of the Algiers Agreements in 2000, which ended the bloody war between Addis Ababa and Asmara to territorial disputes. Tensions between the two countries in 2000, pledged to respect the boundaries set by an independent commission, never become extinct: Ethiopia in fact has never accepted the new boundaries, and has rejected the conclusions of an independent study in 2002 which granted the border town of Badme to Eritrea, for its part, Eritrea has been repeatedly accused of having obstructed the work of the UN mission.
Last February, the Asmara government had decided to cut fuel supplies to the mission, accusing the peacekeepers of not enforcing the international border to Ethiopia. The cutting of fuel had forced the soldiers to decamp. The Security Council has not 'been able to find other sources of supply and the end of June has started to discuss the dissolution of the mission, proposing replace it with an''outpost of observers in Ethiopian territory.'' According to the representative in Brussels, Jan Grauls, "the mission had become impossible to perform." The concern about tensions in the area remain: in recent months has been repeatedly warned of the danger of imminent burst of another war. In the resolution terminating the mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea, the Council calls on both countries to refrain from the use of force''and comply fully with the Algiers Agreements. "
The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, before the vote that he had written to the council pointing out "the risk of escalation tension in the border area and a resumption of hostilities "in case of withdrawal of Minuee, said he was dismayed by the resolution, and has appealed to both countries for normalization of relations, serving as a mediator.

public and I get great pleasure the letter that Laura (GMA - Group Missions Asmara) addressed to Runners without Borders. Dear Laura Thanks !..." Philip
how are you? We have received your payment of 01.16.2008, thank you for your efforts to raise awareness on water in Eritrea.
funds you have submitted will be used to cover the costs of rehabilitation of dam-Arberobu Shgreini.
How has the road racing? Can involve a bit 'of people?
I attach a CD with some photos of the people of the village, work in progress and a panoramic view of the dam settled.
The villagers are very happy with what has been done until now, the next step will be a fountain for drinking water dstribuzione.
people so far imported water from Asmara with a tank, and then poured in the one tank that is in the village of Arberobu, but is not connected to any source, so the shortage of Water has always been a problem. The alternative was to go to a source at the foot of the valley where flows a few drops of water in the early hours of the morning.
Now that the dam is rehabilitated, the water is no longer infected, and can also be used for human use.
soon as we have a technical report from our local office will send on the activities undertaken,
a warm greeting to all members of Runners without Borders

Migrants Bulletin No. 21 - Peace Reporter
"Amara Asmara. Eritrean Exiles To Libya continues to be damned. Misratah To continue, for the past two years, the plight of the 600 prisoners and exiles in pending deportation. Kufrah While in the south of Libya, 200 Eritreans were repatriated in mid-February to Eritrea. Of Unconfirmed reports, the Eritreans are safe Romans. Seven families have confirmed the return of children, which would end in jail in the village of Wea, near Assab. What will become of them? The testimonies of the deportees of the video "Eritrea - Voice of Tortures "leave no doubt will be torture for them at best, death at worst. And we wonder who has paid the flight. Strange that Libya, accustomed to abandon the migrants in the desert, invest so much money for a direct flight to Asmara. Italy has paid? The question is legitimate, since in 2004, Italy paid the repatriation of 109 Eritreans from Libya. But for the moment remain unanswered. Sure, Italy has allocated € 6,243,000 to the Guardia di Finanza for joint patrolling in Libya. The bilateral agreement of December 29, 2007 was ratified by the Libyan government on February 19 and will soon be operational. On January 27 Libya signed a cooperation agreement on rescue at sea with Malta. And from Brussels the European Union has opened negotiations for a framework agreement with Tripoli. News that should not have escaped the Dallal (the organizers of the crossings), given that in February there was a record number of arrivals on the coast of Sicily: 1855 against 355 in February 2007. Everyone wants to do soon. The Dallal, because if the patrols work, they risk losing a lot of money. And the asylum seekers because, if the patrols work, they risk losing their lives. "
