Eritrean Refugees at risk in Libya and Sudan
February 14, 2008 - Rome, the regional representative of the 'UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), Dr. Walter Irvine, received a delegation from Rome to the Italian Committee for Peace, Democracy and Justice in Eritrea.
During the meeting, which was also attended by Dr. Laura Boldrini, UNHCR spokesperson Italy and Dr. Christopher Heine responsible for the CIR (Italian Refugee Council), discussed the various issues concerning the plight of Eritreans detained in detention camps in Libya, exposed to any violations their rights and grave risk of deportation.
While thanking UNHCR and CIR to the stresses that have recently led the Italian Ministry of the reception of 40 Eritreans, the delegation stressed the need for a major annual plan for resettlement from Libya to Europe with the hope that Italy could be a spokesman at the European Commission.
